The Cnidarian Way

YT, a jellyfish by trade, has been bobbing along in the ocean currents for three decades now, from Florida to the UK, Japan to New York. Today she enjoys the warm, wash of the Gulf Stream off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina.

Here YT reflects on living life the Cnidarian Way (adrift), compiles recipes for found object ceviche, muses on metamorphoses and notes all the bits and bobs that comprise a genuinely SLOW LIFE.

This past week found YT drifting through the Gulf visiting old haunts and older friends. And lo, who decides to crash the reunion but distant, estranged, yet still cooler than thou cousin Archie (given name Architeuthis dux, self aggrandizing nicknames Andre the Giant Squid, The Kraken).

Way South of his normal range (scene stealer to the very end), Archie surfaced off the Florida coast and is now being pickled and brined by the lovely children of science at UF. Later in the year YT will make the pilgrimage down yet again to pay her respects, once the preservation process is complete.

Oh, Archie. Is it not enough that sickeningly hip author China Mieville recently published a mystery novel about your exploits in London? Even in death you steal our spineless thunder.

Inverts, let us bow our heads in remembrance and hide all traces of our envy.
